The Air Quality Instruments group within the Environmental Instruments Division has an immediate opening for an R&D Scientist in Optical Spectroscopy to play a major role in the design and development of technology critical in supporting Thermo’s position as the leader in air quality monitoring instrumentation in our Redwood City, California facility. The individual in this role will be part of the Laser Spectroscopy Development team, conducting leading-edge research and development related to laser-based gas phase sensors for an array of applications. This individual will work to transition bench-scale prototypes to commercial products, including building, debugging and characterizing prototypes in order to verify proof of principle or test and verify new products or improvements. The individual will provide guidance and leadership to mechanical and electrical engineers in order to refine prototypes and new products. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the position, this role will require familiarity and interplay with the entire hardware team and several cross functional teams within engineering and research.
This position requires a PhD in physics or chemistry, focused on laser spectrometer instrumentation design. A minimum of 5 years experience in hands on-creation and critical evaluation of innovative optical spectrometers especially involving the development of isotopic analysis methods is required as well as experience in the development of instrumentation for optical spectrometry analysis. Strong knowledge of laser sources, optics design, software, and gas sampling hardware. This candidate must be capable of working with multi-disciplinary teams.
